How To Prevent Programs From Running On Windows Startup (Windows 7, 8 and Vista)

SHARE

This is something you’ll have to deal with sooner or later. Many programs tend to put themselves into the startup list which will automatically run when Windows boots up.

The most of them will inform you about this during their installation, but the checkbox saying “Run this program at Windows startup” will probably be hidden at the corner of the window and already checked.

Also there are many important programs which will bother you during installation offering free antivirus or registry cleaner software, and if you are in the hurry to finish installation process, you will probably end up being flooded with useless software.
These smuggled programs almost always put themselves into the startup list, even without asking for permission.

These programs will not just slow down your Windows booting process, but they will also affect the speed of your computer significantly. They stay active after the the system boot, eating your memory and CPU.

Luckily, there is a pretty simple way to choose which programs will boot along with system. Follow these steps:

1  Click on your windows icon at the left-down corner of the screen and when start menu shows, put this into the search box (without quotes): “msconfig“.

2  Click on the msconfig.exe icon.

3  System Configuration window will appear with General tab selected. Choose Selective startup and select first two options:

System Configuration General

4  Switch to Startup tab and deselect unwanted programs. If you don’t know exactly what program to deselect, extend the Command strip to see location of specific program on hard drive:

System Configuration Startup

5  Once you’re done, press OK button and restart your PC.

That’s it. The unchecked programs will not auto start with Windows any more, but will remain installed on your computer and ready to be used when you need them. Also, if you change your mind and want to turn on specific program again, just go to System configuration/startup and check it again.

Keep in mind that there are tons of malware software that tend to nest into the startup list immediately upon installation so it’s recommended to check this list once in a while. If you are not sure about some program, whether to disable it or not, try googling its name and see the results.

There are many websites on the internet offering information about programs, making you easier to decide which programs you need to keep in your startup list.
